Do you rinse your mouth with water after you brush your teeth in the morning? If so, our dentist, Dr. James Gunelson, encourages you to consider stopping the habit. Now, brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is one of the best things you can do for your smile, so keep it up. But, if you want an even more successful brushing routine, try not to rinse your mouth after you scrub.

This is recommended because if you don’t rinse your mouth after brushing, the fluoride in the toothpaste has a better chance of strengthening and nourishing the tooth enamel. In fact, the longer the fluoride sits on the teeth, the better. So, when you’re done brushing, spit out the extra paste and let your teeth soak in the remaining paste for at least 30 minutes. The fluoride will dive into the enamel and help prevent tooth decay and enamel erosion. Now remember, this is only recommended in the morning. This is because during your night routine, you should follow brushing up with flossing and rinsing. And the mouthwash you rinse with will let your teeth soak in the fluoride as well, so you won’t need to worry about leaving the paste.
