Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies

  • Knocked-out permanent or baby teeth
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Severe toothaches or swelling
  • Injuries to the lips, tongue, or cheeks
  • Objects stuck between the teeth

What to Do Until You Reach Our Office

  • Knocked-out permanent tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and come to our office immediately.
  • Knocked-out baby tooth: Do not try to reinsert it. Call us so we can check for injury to the gums or developing teeth.
  • Broken tooth: Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water, save any pieces, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food. Do not place aspirin on the gums.
  • Cut lip or tongue: Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze and use a cold compress.

If we are not open, go to the nearest emergency center.

Preventing Dental Injuries

Many childhood dental emergencies can be prevented. Have your child wear a custom sports mouth guard during athletics, childproof your home to prevent falls, and discourage chewing on ice, pencils, or hard candy. Regular oral health exams also help us catch problems before they become emergencies. For adult emergencies, see our emergency care page.
