Professional Preventive Care for Kids

We recommend routine dental cleanings for several reasons. During a professional cleaning, we remove plaque and tartar buildup and clean the hard-to-reach areas of your child’s teeth, such as underneath the gums. After the cleaning, we polish the teeth so they shine. We can also apply a fluoride treatment, when needed, to help prevent tooth decay.

Healthy Habits at Home

Infants and Toddlers

Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Once teeth appear, brush with a soft infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.

Young Children

Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and help your child brush twice a day until they can do it well on their own, usually around age seven or eight. Begin flossing once teeth touch each other.

Smart Snacking

Limit sugary snacks and drinks, offer water between meals, and choose tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, fruits, and vegetables. Regular visits combined with good habits help prevent cavities and set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Preventative Dentistry FAQs

Why does my child need professional cleanings?

Cleanings remove plaque and tartar that brushing misses, especially in hard-to-reach areas, helping prevent cavities and gum problems.

Is fluoride safe for children?

Yes. Fluoride is safe and effective at preventing tooth decay when used in the right amounts.

When should my child start using toothpaste?

Use a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth appears, then a pea-sized amount around age three.

How can I help my child brush better?

Brush together, use a timer or song for two minutes, and help them until they have the coordination to brush well alone.

Are sealants part of preventive care?

Yes. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth from decay.

What snacks are best for my child’s teeth?

Cheese, yogurt, fresh fruits and vegetables, and water are great choices.
